Wacky Races

Wacky Races came out in 2000 from developer Sheffield House and publisher Infogrames. Its a kart racing game based of course on the popular Wacky Races cartoon of the late 1960s by Hanna~Barbera. And boy is this a decent racer!
All of the cartoons wonderful oddball and zany characters are playable although Dick Dastardly and Muttley, Red Max and Professor Pat Pending must be unlocked by completing challenges before they become available. (Full character list below.)
There are three areas (Snowfall Peaks, Wild Frontier and Redwood Valley) which have five circuits each to compete against the computer or three friends in different track challenges. Time Trial, Wacky Cup, Golden Muttley Cup and battle arena make up these challenges.

The Slag Brothers worry about Dick Dastardly's ego

Now having never been a 'serious' kart racing fan I was of the opinion that they were pretty easy and getting number one places and quick times were a cinch. How wrong I was! Wacky Races is anything but a walkover and provided me with plenty of hours must~have practice and time to learn the tracks. And with some racing games this can prove frustrating but such is the brilliance of this title, I never once thought of launching my controller through a window.
It looks absolutely lush with hints of cel shading to make it as close to the cartoon as possible with bold black lines and trippy bright colours the show was famous for. Its almost like driving in your very own cartoon. Okay I found the desert tracks to be a little too orangey but hey its the desert!
There are types of controls ~ Race and Kart, with Kart being the easiest (although in some races you would never think it easy.) You can select at first three power ups (three more become available as you progress) which are unique to your character and assign them to the X, Y and B buttons.
Power ups/weapons can be had by collecting tokens that are strewn all over the place. You can also nick them from opponents by ramming their vehicle to kingdom come. In a cool twist of gameplay these tokens are recycled and as you use your power ups/weapons the tokens will plop out of your kart and back onto the circuit for other racers to nab them. In all of the admittedly small amount of kart racers ive played, this way of getting tokens was a new one on me.
The ony gripe I have at Wacky Races is the difficulty. Even at the earlier stages and challenges its very unforgiving and to get top positions and quickest lap times you best be at the top of your game. And choosing the right character and kart is important because on certain tracks some vehicles are not up to the task. For instance I almost totalled the Slag Brothers' Boulder Mobile during a race on the Tombstone Pass in the Wild Frontier. Sorry guys!
But as I said earlier, it never gets beyond the point of tutting before restarting the race. It never makes you feel like boiling the disc in hot oil. This is an impressive kart racer and can be picked up for just a few shekels. I paid £4 for mine which would give anyone that Muttley laugh. Brilliant!

Spirit Of Speed 1937

Spirit Of Speed 1937 was released on June 9th, 2000 under developers Broadsword Interactive and published by Acclaim Entertainment, and like the title suggests it is based around the early days of Formula 1 racing in the 1930s. In the days before safety regulations and crash barriers, where the drivers raced with the very real danger of meeting death at every corner. (And no Murray Walker either!)
Players can race in some of the fastest cars of the day including the Mercedese Benz 125 and 154, Bugati 35B and the legendary Auto Union Type C designed by a certain Ferdinand Porsche.

Right, wheres the SatNav?

Circuits to race your tub, sorry F1 mean machine on are Brooklands, Donington, Montana, Montlhery, Monza, Pau, Roosevelt, Tripoli and Avus. And there are four modes in all ~ Quick Race, Single Race, Championship and Scenario, the latter being the chance to race in a famous race of yesteryear.
Spirit of Speed 1937 was largely panned by most gaming magazines but as ever I am going to go against the tide. Sure the load times can be a pain in the backside and some of the cars move like go~karts (this was the 30s remember?) but this game is NOT broken and not nearly as awful as some critics would have you think.
I had this back in 2000 and thought it looked and played pretty well, as I still do to this day. I booted it up last night for a spin and tracks like the dusty, palm tree lined Tripoli and the steep banks of Brooklands and Roosevelt felt pretty good to race on. Personally I think the reason some gave it a thumbs down is because the circuits proved too challenging for them and they couldn't understand the differences between racing in a modern day Ferrari compared to say a Napier Railton or Watson Flyer of the 1930s.
Of course they are going to be slower and feel 'rickity' to drive! This is pre WW2, duh! I think the attention to detail is spot on, even down to spectators standing behind hay bales and the jazz soundtrack that was popular in this era. And for those petrolheads among us there is the option to tinker with settings during pit stops.

Photobucket Get your motor running

So there you have it. Spirit of Speed isn't the best racing game on the Dreamcast but its competent enough and is certainly not the worst racer available. In fact by going back to 1937 Broadsword Interactive have done something different, rather than sticking to the thrills of modern day Formula 1.
This can be picked up on the auction sites and car boots for as little as £1 or £2 (I paid just over £2 for my copy) and thats a steal if you fancy stepping away from that 2011 Ferrari.

The Dreamcast Collection Released !

A mile wide smile spread across my face this morning when I signed into Twitter and saw the news on Sega's 'Tweet'. It announced the release of the 'Dreamcast Collection', proving what we DC fans already knew ~ there's life in the Dreamcast yet. But its not all rainbows as you'll see below in the announcement:

LONDON & SAN FRANCISCO (January 14th 2011) – SEGA® Europe Ltd. and SEGA® of America, Inc. today announced that a packaged compilation of classic titles from SEGA’s popular Dreamcast™ console will hit retail shelves on the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, and the PC. The Dreamcast Collection will be available on February 25th 2011 in Europe and February 22nd in North America.

The Dreamcast Collection includes the fan favourites Sonic Adventure™, Crazy Taxi™, SEGA Bass Fishing™ and Space Channel 5™: Part 2. Players will get to enjoy four very different Dreamcast experiences, from hopping behind the steering wheel of Crazy Taxi, to taking things a little slower by luring in their fish before catching them hook, line and sinker with SEGA Bass Fishing. Alternatively, take over as intergalactic news reporter Ulala in Space Channel 5: Part 2 and dance your way past the evil Rhythm Rogues, or make it all about speed in Sonic’s first Dreamcast outing, Sonic Adventure!

SEGA’s Dreamcast Collection features enhanced graphics for both platforms versions, providing an even more engaging experience. In addition to this, achievements and online leader boards will be available for each game providing a competitive edge and allowing players to prove their skills!

“The Dreamcast console is still remembered as a pioneering console for online gaming,” commented Gary Knight, VP of Marketing at SEGA of America and SEGA Europe “We are delighted to be able to offer to our large community of dedicated fans a collection such as Dreamcast Collection for them to enjoy old favourites on this generation of consoles."

My Opinion ~ Its fantastic news for Dreamcast lovers, and especially now as this new DC splurge will revive interest in a younger audience who never gor the chance first time around but ! (Ah theres always one) the titles in this collection is not the best Sega might have offered up. People will have already downloaded Crazy Taxi and Sonic Adventure if they have any sense and Sega Bass Fishing, while not being a bad game, wasn't the best.
Still we DCites mustn't grumble as this collection will hopefully pave the way for better releases in the near future.

Chicken Run

Developers ~ Blitz Games Publishers ~ Eidos Interactive Released 24 Nov, 2000.

Chicken Run is a game based on the animated film of the same name and is suprisingly playable compared to the other film-to-game disasters. The story is simple: you must escape Tweedy Farm with all of your domesticated fowl chums by building catapults, see-saws and other comical escape devices. Its a parody of The Great Escape and hen houses look like POW barracks and are fenced in behind barbed wire. It also plays in parts similar to Metal Gear Solid where you must avoid search lights and sneak around with your feathery back to the wall.
Lookswise it can be a little blocky but not so much as to ruin the game, and in truth it only crops up in a few close up shots. Characters move well enough and it does feel like you're in a cartoon. The cut scenes of course are sublime and are straight out of the films animation drawer.
One of the coolest things about Chicken Run is the music. Again its very Great Escape with cheery brass band sections, that really do stir you onward in missions. (Well they do with me!) Voice overs are the genuine artice too.
Another neat touch are the mini games like The Bunty Eggs-Press game where you must feed a hen by tapping the blue button until its full then catch the eggs she lays before they smash on the floor. Neat!
You play three characters ~ Ginger (the main one), Rocky and Nick & Fetcher. Its all mainly gathering the bits and bobs you need to built the devices, while avoiding the Tweedy's and those pesky guard dogs. (You can lure the mutts away by lobbing sprouts around, like the knock-on-wall trick that Snake used in MGS.) When I first played this a decade ago, those dogs were genuinely frightening. It was that close up shot afer they caught you and bared those teeth that did it. Mrs Tweedy too is pretty spooky in a Wicked Witch of the West kinda way.
Im enjoying playing this again after all these years, the only downside is that while the camera can be moved with left/right d-pad dabs its not entirely helpful in allowing you to see your surroundings. I have often ended up in farmer Tweedys torchlight owing to the camera being an awkward swine. Thankfully your position (and those of your enemies) is marked on the little radar at the bottom of the screen (another nod to MGS) so its not utterly frustrating.
All in all Chicken Run is a decent game and for the price of a few pints you can't go far wrong. Wings up!

Top Ten Dreamcast Downloads

Lots of excitement around the fact that PSN and XBLA are now making Dreamcast titles available for download. It seems there might be one a month which is very cool news for veteran Dreamcast players, and those who didn't get to play them on the machine the first time around.
In anticipation of which games will make the download jump here is my TOP TEN wishlist in no particular order. Pay attention Playstation and Xbox download dudes.
N.B. You can read what I think of these games in more depth by going to the relevant review on this blog.

1. CRAZY TAXI

This fantastic game is already confirmed (it could even be available as I type) which pleases me greatly. Hopefully you can mess around with the music too as the only bad thing I have to say about Crazy Taxi was having to listen to The Offspring constantly.
This is near perfect for online shenanigans too.

On the highway to Dreamcast Heaven

2. HOUSE OF THE DEAD 2

Brilliant game and another which would be satisfying online. Rankings on leaderboards, togther with different boss challenges.

3. SILENT SCOPE

Cool game and what else would be cool would the ability to target others online. Good for a Hi-Score table also.

4. SPEED DEVILS

One of the best racers ive ever played. Think about it; you can place bets in Speed Devils and having the chance to bet (and possibly lose) your own vehicles in online races would make for more nteresting battles. And imagine downloading new tracks and vehicles like in Motorstorm. Count me in!

Imagine this in HD on a 50" screen

5. SHENMUE

Need I say more?

6. READY 2 RUMBLE 2

I want to punch out complete strangers in a different country while they are dressed as Bill Clinton. WIN!

7. ZOMBIE REVENGE

An awesome zombie shooter is essential because blasting zombies in the face is fun.

8. POWERSTONE

Either the first one or the second, im not fussed but one of them HAS to be included.

9. VIRTUA TENNIS

The best tennis game on ANY console ever. Online tournaments, new trophies, leaderboards, rankings, its all possible with tennis.

10. GUNBIRD 2

Sega GT

Developers - WOW Entertainment. Publishers - Sega Corporation. Released 2000

Sega GT is a driving simulator that was aimed at being a Gran Turismo beater. Or at least aimed at being on par with Playstation's car game/pornography. And in my opinion it succeeds. Granted this title drove straight past me ten years ago, and truth be told I had already had enough of 'real' driving games thanks to the Sony game but now after all these years I have picked up a copy of Sega GT for my collection and must say, I love it.
All the car makes are here, including Peugot, Suzuki, Subaru,Fiat and Honda, and they look the buisness too. Graphically this a very fine example of what the Dreamcast was capable of. (In fact I get the feeling this game wasn't running at full pelt and Sega's console was capable of so much more.) Still, everything looks lush from road shadows to whispy, moving clouds in the blue sky.
Of course before you can partake in any of the serious races you must first acquire a license. There is the B Class, A Class and SA Class to obtain in all and each will let you in to their relevant races. There are time trials to full blown championships to get stuck in to.
One particularly cool aspect of Sega GT is the corporate sponsorship of the championships (featuring, among others, McDonalds!) Win the tournament title and you'll earn more than just moolah and a fancy car; you'll bag a sponsor who rewards you further with great performances. The money is all well and good but the Golden Arches still hasn't gotten me my very own Big Mac vending machine.
When not racing for money (and burgers) you can pay a visit to your garage and upgrade your cars by fine tuning everything from fly wheels to pistons. Fans of the other driving simuluator will know what I mean here.
The only downside to Sega GT is during the early Club stages, the races are slow and as you can only afford a basic, un-souped up car you are forced to grind around the circuit feeling like you are steering an iron on wheels. But the game is only reflecting reality so no blame can really be applied to Sega GT.
Another great thing about this game is the music. Different races have different music styles so for example the dusty, desert circuit 'Deep Rock Road' has gentle country music in the background whilst 'Sky Peak Hill' has jazz. Its all a merciful release from having the likes of Ash belt out the same tedious track ad infinitum like they did on Gran Turismo.
Best news of all? It can be taken for a spin for the same price as a pint of beer so racing fans should have no excuses for not picking this up.

Jager Rating: 10 Jagerbombs !!
